by Maria Lucia Venegas, Senior Designer

Having been in this industry for years, my philosophy has always
been to design for all five senses. I love textures, the touch of
paper, the smell of a book fresh off the press. When I design a
package, I want it to be an experience that tells a story. Opening
a brochure should be an exploration, anticipating the content by
reacting to the materials, the appreciation for letterpress,
emboss, deboss and the innumerable experiences involving all the
senses. Recently, I have been challenging myself mentailly,
emotionally and creatively to re-direct my passion for the sensory
experience into "Creating for Digital Media." This is a media that,
by nature, only gets to our sense of sight through a flat
surface... or so I thought. Instead of battling against my
instincts, I have begun to embrace the new possibilities in
digital, and in a surprising transition, am starting to feel the
same emotion of creation. So I guess, as a designer, you could say
I am growing up. Yes, I will stay close to nature and stay in tune
with the sensorial experiences that drive my inspiration, but I
will search out new ways to activate the senses via a flat surface.
That could be full of surprises!
